Fans of Sega’s classic beat ’em up series Streets of Rage are gearing up for the franchise’s first outing since 1994, and those with an affinity for physical games just received another reason to be excited.
Earlier today, the Twitter account of North Carolina-based publisher Limited Run Games confirmed plans to release physical copies of Streets of Rage 4. Details were sparse, but Limited Run says more information is coming soon.
Most Limited Run releases hit Sony PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, with a small amount of collector’s editions available that include pieces of relevant memorabilia like soundtracks, posters and pins.
Streets of Rage 4 is scheduled for a 2020 release. Canonically, the game takes place 10 years after Streets of Rage 3 and stars franchise mainstays Axel, Blaze and Adam. New characters are promised, including the guitar-wielding Cherry Hunter. Gameplay videos for the title show off familiar maneuvers and nostalgic sound effects coupled with new HD visuals and catchy songs inspired by the Genesis era’s neon drenched soundtracks.
The soundtracks for all three Genesis titles are available on vinyl via English label Data Discs, which specializes in game soundtracks.
Streets of Rage is tops for me when it comes to 16-bit gaming. I’ll buy the special edition of Streets of Rage 4, the vinyl soundtrack for Streets of Rage 4 and any other merch Sega is generous enough to throw my way. This can’t release soon enough.
