Born in 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, Ginsburg has a professional history full of spurring along progress. In 1972, she helped found American Civil Liberties Union’s Womens Rights Project. After earning a United States Supreme Court seat in 1993, she earned a reputation for leaning to the left and penning strongly worded dissents in court cases, leading to the nickname The Notorious R.B.G.

At more than 26 years in her seat, Ginsburg is the second longest-tenured Supreme Court justice behind Clarence Thomas.
