Toymaker Mattel has revealed details regarding its 2019 San Diego Comic-Con exclusive collectibles, but those not attending the show may not like what they read.
Mattel is currently accepting pre-orders for its convention exclusives through its online storefront. After pre-orders are placed, buyers must check in at Mattel’s booth to “claim” their item. Their order will then ship from Mattel’s warehouse.
This means Mattel’s convention exclusives won’t be available outside the event, sans this beautiful recreation of the ’90s most iconic spokesperson that Entertainment Earth will accept pre-orders for starting June 18.
For those attending, Mattel offers a retro-styled figure of Prince Adam from ’80s franchise He-Man, as well as a Hot Wheels replica of Spider Machine GP7, the car driven by Japan’s Spider-Man, Takuya Yamashiro, in the ’70s animated series.
Other exclusives include Hot Wheels cars based on the Batmobile as seen in Tim Burton’s 1989 film Batman, another Hot Wheels that recreates Metal Mario from MarioKart and a Jurassic Park figure set.
Our Take
This is a convoluted way to sell product, and while these items are certainly appealing, their distribution method isn’t. Hopefully, Mattel makes future exclusives available to the public—or leaves convention exclusivity for the convention floor.
